Fractions:
A fraction is a number expressed in the form of a/b. It is also a ratio of algebraic quantities similarly expressed, a part as distinct from the whole of anything; portion or section. It also means a very small part or segment of anything; minute portion. It consists of a numerator and a denominator. The numerator represents a number of equal parts and the denominator, how many parts make up a whole. 1/2 in example, is in which 1 (the numerator) represents 1 part of the 2 wholes (denominator).

Ratio:
The relation between two similar magnitudes with respect to the number of times the first contains the second and also,
a measure of the relative size of two classes expressible as a proportion. It is expressed as a:b or sometimes, arithmetically as a dimensionless quotient of the two, which explicitly indicates how many times the first number contains the second.

Fractions:
A fraction is a number that can represent part of a whole. The earliest fractions were ancient symbols representing one part of two, one part of three, one part of four, and so on. A much later development were the common fractions which are still used today. Which consist of a numerator and a denominator, the numerator representing a number of equal parts and the denominator telling how many of those parts make up a whole. An example is 3/4, in which the numerator, 3, tells us that the fraction represents 3 equal parts, and the denominator, 4, tells us that 4 parts make up a whole.

Ratio:
In mathematics, a ratio is a relationship between two numbers of the same kind, usually expressed as "a to b" or a:b, sometimes expressed arithmetically as a dimensionless quotient of the two, which explicitly indicates how many times the first number contains the second.

Difference between ratio and fraction:

A ratio is an expression which compares quantities relative to each other. The most common examples involve two quantities, however in theory any number of quantities can be compared. Mathematically they are represented by separating each quantity with a colon. A fraction is an example of a specific type of ratio, in which the two numbers are related in a part-to-whole relationship, rather than as a comparative relation between two separate quantities. A fraction is a quotient of numbers, the quantity obtained when the numerator is divided by the denominator.

Ratio:

A ratio indicates the relative sizes of two or more quantities that have the same kind of measurement, like length or weight. When you write a ratio you use the symbol : between the numbers. For example if you weigh 75 pounds and your parent weighs 150 pounds, the ratio of your weights is 75:150.

What is a Fraction?

Is there a difference between a fraction and a ratio? What is the difference?

Fractions: A fraction is a number that names part of a whole or part of a group. The denominator represents the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into. A ratio is a comparison of two quantities.Fractions are two numbers in which they are related in a part-to-whole relationship. For example, there are 2 boys and 5 girls. They add up to a whole number which is 7. 2 over 7 are boys. The number of boys(2) is part of the whole quantity(7).

Ratios: A ratio is a comparison of two quantities. Ratios depend on the numbers that are being compared. When you are describing a part of a whole, a fraction is appropriate. When you are comparing two numbers, a ratio is appropriate. For example, the amount of water in comparison to the amount of juice powder in it. The ratio of powder to water could be 3 parts powder to 8 parts water, or 3:8.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FRACTION AND A RATIO
A ratio is an expression which compares quantities relative to each other. The most common examples involve two quantities, however in theory any number of quantities can be compared. Mathematically they are represented by separating each quantity with a colon, for example the ratio 2:3, which is read as the ratio "two to three".

A fraction is an example of a specific type of ratio, in which the two numbers are related in a part-to-whole relationship, rather than as a comparative relation between two separate quantities. A fraction is a quotient of numbers, the quantity obtained when the numerator is divided by the denominator. Thus 3⁄4 represents three divided by four, in decimals 0.75, as a percentage 75%.
Fraction : 3/5 stars are happy :) Ratio Happy Stars : Sad Stars 3:2

What Are Differences between Fractions and Ratios?

A ratio is a quantity that denotes the proportional amount or magnitude of one quantity relative to another.
A fraction is an example of a specific type of ratio, in which the two numbers are related in a part-to-whole relationship, rather than as a comparative relation between two separate quantities. A fraction is a quotient of numbers, the quantity obtained when the numerator is divided by the denominator. Thus 3⁄4 represents three divided by four, in decimals 0.75, in percents 75%. The three equal parts of the cake are 75% of the whole cake.
Ratios are unitless when they relate quantities of the same dimension. When the two quantities being compared are of different types, the units are the first quantity "per" unit of the second — for example, a speed or velocity can be expressed in "miles per hour". If the second unit is a measure of time, we call this type of ratio a rate whereasFraction are meaningless without units Fractions and percentages are both specific applications of ratios. Fractions relate the part (the numerator) to the whole (the denominator) while percentages indicate parts per 100
An example is 3/4, in which the numerator, 3, tells us that the fraction represents 3 equal parts, and the denominator, 4, tells us that 4 parts make up a whole and in ratio it mean 3:4 .

external image ratio1.jpg
In the first diagram, the ratio of the shaded parts to the unshaded parts is 2:3. The fraction of the shaded parts is 2/5.

A fraction is a way of representing division of a 'whole' into 'parts'. The Numerator is the number of parts chosen, and the Denominator is the total number of parts. A fraction is a division problem, basically:

½ means "one divided by two"
¾ means "three divided by four"

Another way of thinking of it is:
½ "one of two pieces" and
¾ "three of four pieces

In mathematics, a ratio is a relationship between two numbers of the same kind[1] (i.e., objects, persons, students, spoonfuls, units of whatever identical dimension), usually expressed as "a to b" or a:b, sometimes expressed arithmetically as a dimensionless quotient of the two,[2] which explicitly indicates how many times the first number contains the second.[3]

Notation and terminology
The ratio of numbers A and B can be expressed as:[4]
  • the ratio of A to B
  • A is to B
  • A:B
The numbers A and B are sometimes called terms with A being the antecedent and B being the consequent.
The proportion expressing the equality of the ratios A:B and C:D is written A:B=C:D or A:B::C:D. this latter form, when spoken or written in the English language, is often expressed as

For the figure on the top right, it represents 1/2 or half. It also represents 1:1
For the figure below, it represents 3/6 or 1/2 in simplest form. It also represents 3(green):3(white).
